But there was still something missing. An old-time piano competition needs its own old-time piano. So in that pivotal year of 1986, it was also decided that the contest should obtain one for that purpose. It just happened that contest coordinator Judy Leschewski (below left) and husband Ron had just moved into a house that had an old beat up white piano that was whale-like in proportion to her spinet. It was immediately named Moby Dink after the great white whale, put on display, and used as the foundation for the Piano Pals, friends of the contest who donated to its rehabilitation. The organization has since gone on to loftier goals than it was founded on, and has not only helped to restore and maintain the piano, but contributed to prize money and other aspects as well. Judy’s piano technician brother, Herb Dady of Nashville Tennessee, rebuilt the innards of the 1883 behemoth in time for the 1988 competition, and the outside was restored to its original rosewood finish before 1989. It has remained the competition piano since that time……
